Dear Theo,

This morning I heard from home what had happened to you, 1今天早上我从家里听说了你的事。（提奥不慎摔倒，脚受了比较严重的伤。）and I wanted to write you at once. I wish I could do something for you; one of these days a box will be sent to The Hague 海牙（提奥在海牙工作）, I will put some chocolate in it for you. Gladwell calls that “consolation 安慰 .” I will also send you the book by Jules Breton - at least, if I can get it back, as I lent it to somebody. I am anxious to know how you are 我非常想知道你现在怎么样了 ; write soon and please give me some details about how you spend your days.

How I should like to be with you, Theo, but what can we do? 我多么想和你在一起呀，提奥，但我们能做什么呢？ It cannot be helped, boy. In a fortnight 两星期（两星期后是圣诞节）I shall go home and then we will certainly see each other, and our meeting again will not be the less delightful 令人愉快的 for the accident that has befallen 发生 you.

If you see Uncle Jan 凡高的约翰伯伯（Johannes van Gogh 1817.8.19-1885）一位海军司令,生活在阿姆斯特丹., please remember me to him and thank him for his letter. You must try to become good friends with him. I don' t know him well, but I know he is “pure gold 纯金 .”

It has been very cold. Fortunately, the thaw 解冻 set in yesterday. I was very glad of it.

I am rather busy these days with the inventory 存货清单 and finishing things off before my departure 离开 .
